Asbestos Found in Debris
Homes and Structures that are damaged or destroyed by a flood or fire can result in toxic debris and ash that contains heavy metals, asbestos, and other hazardous materials. If inhaled, microscopic asbestos fibers pose a serious health threat because they can become permanently lodged in body tissues.
Disturbing debris from structures containing asbestos may expose individuals. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that:
• An asbestos survey be conducted by a licensed asbestos consultant before disturbing debris that is suspected to contain asbestos
• Asbestos containing debris be removed by a licensed asbestos contractor
